Boy meets girl on OkCupid. In the course of trying to download Ghostbusters, girl introduces boy to (fictitious) social file-sharing site, The Lionshare. Boy digs site, but turns out girl does not dig boy that much. Boy mopes around the city, not for a moment imagining that The Lionshare is the thing that's leading her away from him...
The Lionshare is an important kind of film for right now, the kind of film 'anyone' could have made -- 'anyone', that is, with a good bit of talent, who takes it seriously, using dialogue (and in-jokes) prised straight from their own lives, the backdrop of their own homes for scenery, friends as actors and their own experiences as scenarios. These are the sort of stories any of us have, and telling them is what the new cinema is all about. (The film's shot on a domestic-grade HD camera too, so don't let that stop you.)
Creation is one of the 'messages' of the film. As well as -- via The Lionshare -- recommending and distributing media to each other, most of the characters are also creating their own stuff -- DJing, writing music and making films. If we're like them, trying to make our own stuff and get it out there, what The Lionshare shows is that our films needn't just be YouTube five-minute wonders -- now we can do features too!
The film's a sign of great things to come from director Josh Bernard, and we're delighted to be releasing his movie through the VODO network. Like the filmmakers behind Sweden's recent 'Nasty Old People', Josh has been smart and forward thinking enough to use peer-to-peer to distribute his film. We should all be supporting him while we think about what films _we're_ gonna make in 2010. New Year's resolution anyone?
This release also includes the beautiful short animation 'Legacy' by Grzegorz Jonkajtys. A alien arrives on planet earth, in search of a human specimen. But appearances can be deceiving...
