Why the bigger file size? Was it a longer episode, or something?

admin : new huh? 720p HD version.

It was another limited commercial episode. The total running less commercials
was just shy of 50 minutes.

"admin : new huh? 720p HD version."

Uhh, NO!

I was wondering exactly the same thing when I saw the filesize: 1493MB.

These eps are normally 1100 - 1120MB and like the1freeman (who, I'd wager, knows
this - like I assume you do admin) I was also wondering "why the extra few
hundred MB?" It's a legitimate question to ask, and you really don't need to
treat someone like an idiot for asking it.

Thank you to Clean for providing an informed (and also pleasant) response.

hmm ... they seem to have jumped from "4 eps to a dvd" size to "3 eps to a dvd"
size for this one, which of course means that we will only get this one and the
pilot onto a single disc because the extra size of this one will leave only
~750MB for the 3rd ep - not enough for a 720p.

At 50 minutes, I'd wager this would still have looked fine with x264 at 1120MB
size. (at least, if a 2 or 3 pass encode was used)

Well, I just noticed that the 350MB version stayed the same size - adding to the
reasons for asking the question: "why the bigger file size for the 720p?"

Again, thanks to clean for providing the answer. That's something that those of
us who haven't yet downloaded the ep, and don't live in the US (and that's most
people), just can't easily know until someone tells us.

File formats aside, this was a steep nose-dive compared to the pilot. Darin
Morgan is so talented but there was a lot of "x-files borrowing" in this ep. But
there's still hope...

thanx for the upload

Ummm... yeah. What's with the file format? .MVK?!?!?! Come-on, no one uses
that format. Stick with the .AVI format please. It makes life so much easier
cause I don't have to waste 45 mintues to convert it to an AVI file.

Thanks.

admin : where do you live? In the Jurassic? If you want .avi get the 350 file
and let PLENTY of other people enjoy the fine HD .mkv file.

On that point, I'd have to agree with admin. I like my h264 hd mkv's.

"What's with the file format? .MVK?!?!?!"
Umm, ".mvk" ... dunno never heard of it. .mkv (Matroska Video) on the other
hand is a well known modern open source file format. If you want HD on the net
for free (ie., all these torrents you apparently like), it's likely gonna be a .mkv

Ok... typo... by bad.

So that said: know any good burning utils? Thus far I'm using Nero because
that is what I have and have never needed anything else. But it doesn't seems
to handle .MKV files very well (unless it's just that my version is out-dated,
which is most likely the case).

As in a burning util to make a standard dvd compatible version? I can't say I
use that feature really, and I tend to not trust a generalised automated burning
program to get the conversion right every time - what can I say, I like to know
exactly what I'm encoding to. That said if you're converting to dvd you won't
get much extra by using a hd source file: the 350MB version generally isn't too
far from dvd resolution, and you'd save a much bigger download for only
incremental quality improvements at dvd res, but I can understand wanting the
best quality dvd version you can get, and encoding from a hd source will give
you the best result you can get (if the extra dl doesn't bother you). If I was
going to make a dvd version I'd probably use a separate program (perhaps Media
Coder or Super [not that you can really mess with settings too much with Super])
to make the vob version and then get Nero to burn that.

Others will likely have different program preferences. I watch my downloaded
files on my pc, so I generally have no need to rehash for dvd, and the 720p's
are a better quality picture than our tv's (we don't have a hdtv yet), and dvd
can't even hope to match.
