Unfortunately, the sound on this is so low, it is worthless. And since it is in matroska, I only have 1 way to play it... mplayer, which can't jack up the volume high enough. If it were in H.264/mp4, I would have 4 ways to play it, 3 of which can jack up the volume. GOD I HATE MATROSKA! A total waste of bandwidth. |

The file *is* H.264 (or rather x264, the freeware version), MKV and MP4 are just containers. And there are a bunch of media players that play MKV files. |

I have no problems seeing it in BSPlayer, and BSPlayer has a equalizer that allows you to amplify the volume. |

VLC with matroska has issues, especially if you are using H.264, also if you are using hi-def, and even moreso, if you have embedded subtitles. Forget it working at all if you have all three (avg. framerate for all three is 1 frame every 10-20s). I tried this file for a lark on both my 2.53C2D Linux box and my 2.5Ghz Dual G5, with no other processor load, I got about 5fps on the Linux and 3fps on the Mac, that is, when it didn't stall out. However, using .ogm, .mp4, or .avi I never have any issues... I even periodically use my Mac to drive 8 monitors for special displays at the University... and using 8 separate .avi/xvid video files at 1280x720, I never have a single skipped frame. Why can't I run even one 640x480 matroska file, with subtitles? When Matroska runs smoothly on ALL platforms (it often doesn't even work right ON windows), and with portable devices, I'll stop bitchin' and will support it. But, I've been waiting for that for quite a number of years, and there is no sign of decent efficiency on anything but modern Windows. I work in video and specialize in cross-platform work... so I'm perfectly aware of how awful it really is. |

Weird, I've never noticed any playback issues with these HighDef MKVs in VLC. Win XP Pro x64, 3GHz Dual Core Pentium D with 4GB RAM here though. I've never cared for MKV either, but it seems to be catching on quite well in retail as well. DivX is already using it and standalone DivX DVD Players are already coming out with MKV playback support. So I'd be surprised if it will be going anywhere any time soon. (BTW, Just tested a HD MKV with fraps, got the full 24fps.) Funny thing is, my older single core 2GHz AMD Athlon XP with 1GB of RAM plays MKVs just fine too. Also Win XP Pro on it, x86 though. @ flaming-griddle: It was still low volume for you in VLC? I did notice when looking at the AC3 file in Audacity that it was lower volume than usual, but it still sounded loud enough in VLC. Anyways....Can't wait for more Lost. |

Aikousha - i have absolutely no problems with matroska in linux (dont have a mac). It's by far my favourite container now. while i use mplayer and not vlc; i have tried mkv w/ vlc before and never had an issue. (most of the examples i can think of are h.264/multisubs/HD resolution. Sounds like you needa do some digging, because your getting snagged up somewhere. (And also because matroska is taking over the world, don't wanna be stuck mp4ing it with all the pod-ppl) Hey ---- just read your first post about mplayer volume - follow this http://how-to.wikia.com/wiki/How_to_increase_MPlayer_volume_above_sound_cards_maximum_volume really simple information to get mplayer loud. |
