I was extremely excited to see Bill's opinion shared on a non subscription network... little did I know that he didn't have enough time to write new material, so he just regurgitated jokes from his show (Real Time) on Friday March 26. If you saw Bill Maher in last weeks show, and are only downloading this to see Bill give logical arguments towards his pet topics (Religion and Marijuana), then I have to tell you there is no need. Every time he started to get into something interesting it would quickly end with a punchline, then the show would move on. His ideology is almost identical to mine... it felt like my (and his) views were poorly represented and merely laughed at here. Socialized medicine and decriminalization of all victimless crimes are very serious issues. Someone needs to dig in and help people realize these aren't simply subjects to provide material for late night shows; rather they are ridiculous ontological positions which make criminals out of millions of citizens who otherwise are rational, moral and productive citizens. these issues include Gay rights, all drug use, suicide, group marriages, and other similair ones. basically anything you can do in your home by yourself or with another consenting party that wouldn't effect anyone else other than them simply having knowledge of it. Maybe we could start making serious issues illegal, like the rape and torture of young boys by religious authorities, advertisement of unhealthy food directly aimed at children, pollution, prescription abuse and over-treatment by physicians and creating lies to write into primary and secondary education school books under the pretense of fact. (Note to the Texan publishers: anything which exists only in the bible and can't be confirmed by other means is merely an OPINION, written by a HUMAN with his own aspirations and morals directly relating to his life over a thousand years ago. Things which are corroborated by scientists all around the world, or historical events well documented by multiple sources are considered FACTS. Please get those two things straight before creating books used to educate our youth about FACTS.) I do in fact realize that nobody will read this, and if they do it won't matter. I'm just hoping if I mention it enough, more people will think about the topics and form their own opinions. Thanks for reading |

well I read your post SirDeimos I agree with Bill on most things but there are some issues in which he seems unrealistic, such as his beef with vaccinations. you may remember a show where he suggest that pregnant women should NOT get vaccinated for swine flu. Seems very odd that a man that cracks down on conspiracy theories all the time believes that vaccinations are a conspiracy. He also does this thing whenever the topic of global warming comes up. He likes to point out that all "serious" scientists agree that global warming is real and it's caused by humans. This leads me to believe that he thinks any scientist who disagrees with that is considered not 'serious'. Remember the spat he had on March 12th with Amy Holmes? I thought she presented some good points (all while Bill tried to talk over her, poking fun at her for being skeptical), mainly that global warming is used very often as a scare tactic. Bill seems to think it's a good idea to use it as a scare tactic, to quote him directly, "I wish there were more scare tactics." That is where I differ far from him. I am not a global warming denier, but I used to be. The reason I used to be is because it is so often used as a scare tactic and when it's used that way, it makes it sound like bullshit. |

I much appreciate you reading this and your thought out reply. All throughout college though as I looked at data concerning climate change, it is undeniable that humans are effecting the atmosphere in ways that will lead to an hospitable environment for many forms of life... particularly those who can't regulate their body temperature. I think what Bill means by "serious scientist" is one who looks at data and makes an objective conclusion, despite what they or the people/organizations who are funding them want to be true. There are many people employed as scientists who don't separate their personal views from the research. It's funny that swine flu is the other thing you brought up, as that was a hugely overinflated threat generated to keep our attention focused at news outlets. I understand why people don't want to believe out effect on the earth is negative though, because if they admit to that problem then they run short on excuses which will allow them to live their lives without worrying about it. If it's just a scare tactic or an unsubstantiated claim, then it's just philosophy... but if it's real then we all need to make serious changes, or else admit that we don't care about anyone or anything else except our selves. The one thing we can all count on though, is that the earth and life in general (on earth) will adapt to whatever changes we make to earth. species which consume more than can be produced die off due to a lack of resources, and it allows less dominant forms of life to thrive. So when/if people claim all life will end if we don't control "global warming"... well they're just as ignorant as the people who refuse to believe facts, or just as naive as the people who don't know them.... since they are one of them. I am NOT attacking your response, as I did genuinely appreciate that someone read what I wrote and took the time to reply. Frankly, I believe if we don't reduce our impact on the earth, then we deserve to be made extinct (or endangered)... we're not the only important form of life on this rock. Thanks again! P.S. I agree with you in that I HATE when people use global warming as a scare tactic, it makes it seem like politics instead of what it is... but there is no denying that it is scary. |
