Its not a bad show, but some facts are rather wrong or distorted. First of all, the legionares weren't call 'Marius Mules' because they trained every day, but because Marius ordered every legionare to carry additional weight to up to 30kg total, to cut down on Animal carriers. Secondly, Varius was commander of the northern legions, but he was stationed in Gaul. The German Tribes east of Gaul were allies of Rome but not subjects of Rome. Yet Varius lead 3 legions into german owned terretories to collect taxes! Thats like the 3rd US armored divsion entering Canada to collect taxes! Natrually the German tribes did not like that and Arminus (Herrman in german) knowing roman tactics and warfare well, beeing a mercenary for years, Lay a trap. Today we know the main fighting was not in woodlands but in a swampy area, where many arifact are still beeing found today. That the fighting was in the swamps not in the woods, was discovered about a decade ago, therefor they could not know in 1998 when the doco was made. |
