I really like 'ugly betty, but! - I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the latest episode of US hit show 'Ugly Betty' 1.14 [episode 14, season 1]. The last 5 minutes of it were a complete take of Return To Eden 2.17 [Australia, 1986] - the episode where Stephanie Harper [played by Rebecca Gilling]returns from the dead on the fashion show. Even the actress that played in 'Ugly Betty' - and took the 'role' of Stephanie - was looking very similar to Rebecca Gilling!!! And the whole concept of Ugly Betty is also taken from Return To Eden; The Ugly duckling story and all that.. What a shock!! See for yourself here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vTCuJ2diXak |

I don't know about 'the last five minutes' or Return to Eden, but the concept of Ugly Betty has been around much much longer. The show started in Brazil many years ago and has been translated or remade in many different countries. Some as a drama, and some as a comedy. Some are simply voiced over in the local language. And some have made a new series out of it. The US is simply the latest one to try it. I know that in Russia, it was done as a drama and was completely and utterly boring. No doubt Executive Producer Salma Hayek pulled it from her own culture, probably having watched the Latin American version when she was younger. I doubt Return to Eden has been around _that_ long. |
