BBC Dig 1940 HDTV x264 AAC MVGroup 2010

To mark the 70th anniversary of 1940, presenter and archaeologist Jules Hudson goes on a journey of
discovery into Britain's darkest and, in the words of Winston Churchill, 'finest hour'.

1. Battle of France and Dunkirk
Jules and his team are in France digging up crashed German aircraft from the opening months of World
War Two, accompanied by an RAF fighter pilot who saw action there in 1940. A Dunkirk veteran
recounts the horrors of the evacuation, while Jules makes some revealing finds on the beaches of
Dunkirk - poignant reminders of Britain's most perilous year. Featuring aviation archaeologists
Steve Vizard and Gareth Jones; Peter Ayerst DFC, the last living pilot of the RAF's 73 Squadron, who
were in France in 1940; and Richard Sampson, veteran of the 1940 Dunkirk evacuation.

"finest hour" - what bollocks. I can't stand the English crowing on about Dunkirk like it wasn't a
complete disaster for them

Pipe down kid and go take some history lessons.

The UK stopped Hitler by being one of the countries to stand up and say enough is enough, without
the UK getting involved the whole of mainland Europe would've been German now.

Now seeing as you are such a good tactician would you like to explain how you would've done it with
the logistics and machinery available at the time, and remember hindsight is a wonderful thing.

All those beaches were heavily fortified, any army would take big losses in those conditions, and
remember US soldiers also died on those beaches as well.

I'll sum it up for you, Hitler was defeated by a combo of the UK and foreign pockets of resistance,
supply and man help from the US, and finally the Russian's with a dolop of bad weather thrown in for
good measure, this is why Thatcher took the Falklands back asap, had she waited the weather would've
made it impossible and the Arg would've been reinforced and well supplied by the time the window
opened again, now sit back down and be grateful that many folks gave their lives so you can spout
off on the web in this century.

There is no crowing going on you imagine it, it was a bad time for all, and many fell, the finest
hour solely for the UK was the RAF repelling the Luftwaffe in the early days of the war, outnumbered
and outgunned and the UK didn't fall, the finest hour for all was when Berlin fell.

Get your facts straight... Their "finest hour" was the Battle of Britain several months later. And as for Dunkirk being a
disaster if Churchill had not evacuated the BEF largely intact it is unlikely the Brits would have had the stomach to fight on
alone until the self interest of the Americans finally brought them in...
Such ignorance makes me despair for the state of schooling these days

I agree it was a fairly well staged withdrawal - but it was just that: a defeat and total rout of
the English. Propaganda at the time flipped it into some sort of glorious victory. Only the Poms
could be so self delusional

Totally untrue... If you pick up a book (clearly going against your normal policy) you will almost universally hear the
authors mention the "Fall of France". In case that is not clear enough for you... the FRENCH were defeated.
Propaganda by the English did no such thing. They rightly recognized it as a disaster avoided not a glorious victory...
I submit that you sir are the one who is deluded

@ Warren

I forgot to mention Aussie soldier's who fought in both WW1 & 2 for the Allies, so in the interest
of history they also deserve a mention.

What you must move on from is you seem to dislike British Establishment, guess what? so do we, they
don't represent us the folks of the UK anymore, the last ten years proves that, and I for one do not
wish to be tainted by their action's, however again many brave folks are in action and we do support
them.

As Ninja says France was defeated pretty early on, to get the expeditionary force back out alive a
tactical retreat had to be made, that in itself was a fine move, and if you are Australian you
should know that after the way the knobs wasted many of your countrymen at Galipoli during WW1.
