The Other Side of Immigration Sociopolitical Documentary hosted by Roy Germano, published by AllMovie Film in 2010 - English narration Information ------------------------------ The Other Side of Immigration Based on over 700 interviews in Mexican towns where about half the population has left to work in the United States, The Other Side of Immigration asks why so many Mexicans come to the U.S. and what happens to the families and communities they leave behind. Through an approach that is both subtle and thought-provoking, filmmaker Roy Germano provides a perspective on undocumented immigration rarely witnessed by American eyes, challenging audiences to imagine more creative and effective solutions to the problem. This documentary doesn't offer "another side", in fact its just another fluff piece that perpetuates and regurgitates the same illegal immigration propaganda that all illegals are "hard working" and "looking for a better way of life" while ignoring the crimes and massive leeching off of our public school, welfare and medicare system by these illegals. |

Re: the same illegal immigration propaganda that all illegals are "hard working" and "looking for a better way of life" Even if all illegals are coming to our country to work hard and make a better life for themselves, that doesn't imply that they shouldn't be deported. There are tens of millions (probably as many as a hundred million) people throughout the world who would come to the US tomorrow if they had the means and if we allowed it. The fact is that coming here has a financial value. Most immigrants are looking for better salaries than they can get in their homes. That's what "greater opportunity" really means. It's not about an affection for American culture or values. It's about money. It's a privilege and not a right to be able to emigrate to a country which is not your own. We've gotten rid of the quota system for individual countries generations ago in order to make it more fair for everyone throughout the world who wants to apply to come here. People who migrate illegally are basically saying that they don't care about our rules or about fairly allocating the benefits of migration. They'll just take opportunities which don't belong to them. Illegal aliens who do migrant agricultural labor actually prevent there from being progress on expanding guest worker programs, which are discussed in the film as a possible solution. From the employers perspective they're cheaper and there's less red tape involved. From the laborers' perspective these programs would not automatically give opportunities to the same populations who are migrating illegally. When ICE gets rid of illegal immigrants who harvest grapes in vineyards in California, they get replaced by legal guest workers who may come from the Dominican Republic or Haiti or some other place where it's not possible for people to just cross our border. Illegal immigrants decide that they'll just take an opportunity to make more money even if it means breaking the law and cutting in front of or taking the place of other people who are just as economically disadvantaged as they are, but who either can't or won't break the rules. |
