If you install MediaCoder from http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net/ , you can
easily convert the 1100MB MKV files to 700MB AVI files.

It does not look all that easy.... any preset one can use?

I haven't figured out the best settings for exactly 700MB, but try this:

On the video tab, set format=XviD, container=AVI, Mode=Bitrate-based,
bitrate=2100Kbps. On the audio tab, set Encoder="LAME MP3".
On the LAME settings, pick CBR/Stereo/128Kbps.

Or, if you want to keep the AC3 audio (see "Copy Audio" checkbox), try video
bitrate=1800Kbps.

Then just load the MKV file, and hit start.

Maybe there's another tool that's more "1 click", but I like the flexibility of
MediaCoder.

well yeah you could do that but mean while the 540p HR's look better when
encoded from the actual 720p mpeg-2 source. sure 720p 1.07gb x264 look good but
the source is much better.

if you do use that program i would suggest keeping the 5.1 DD AC-3 audio as
thats half the reason for HR. also check if it has an easy bitrate calculator.
or my preference would just be virtualdubmod and a avisynth that says

directshowsource("lost.s04e02.720p.hdtv.x264-ctu.mkv", fps=23.976)
crop (2,4,-2,-0) #left,top,-right,-bottom
lanczos4resize(960,544)

however thats not a one click install and one click operate but the best way to go

Deth (or anyone) -

Can you refer me to a wiki page or something that explains what you said in terms that someone not as
familiar with this? Your advice seems inspired, but swear to gods, it's like Swahili to me. Which is
something I'd like to change. Sort of an overview of media and sound formats, tradeoffs, etc. I'm down w/
all the tech/file format related stuff, but the content stuff? Not so much. Thanks!

Thx to the maker of this release. I have a an old Xbox and I prefer AC3 sound,
but it cannot play x264 Files. So, I am very pleased to see a HR AC3 version...

Oh, yeah, and another n000b Q.

Say you've got a phat blu-ray type file. Say you crank down half it's vid resolution. Let's call that x. Say you
crank down half it's audio. Let's call that y.

How much does x save, and y? In file space, of course.

For instance, some shows have decent video, yet audio that's like listening to my grandpa's radio. Which
I'm assuming is done to conserve file space. How much space are they saving when going down a couple
notches?

Sure, I know vid's more file-hogging, but audio too, right, just not as bad? And (here's where the art of
burning comes in), how to get an optimal balance? Say for a WS HD TV, where you're looking for a "B"
quality.

Umm, or is this better reposted in the forums? Heh, just realized that...
