Why would you up the bitrate and quality on a talk show? And then not offer
a "normal" version? I don't get it...

I think you forget, mcbrite, that this is on HBO and there are no commercials,
thus there is 15-20 minutes more show than a typical hourlong.

Mcbrite is correct they have uped the bitrates. This show is usually posted
around the usual 350mbs. And being a talk show there isn't a lot of complex
movement colour changes etc so it is a bit of waste.

Those of us who are bandwidth challenged much prefer the smaller files since the
benefits nil to negligible at best.

Umm, you hadnt noticed that KYR also has been doing em at 550mb since it went
HD a few weeks back. It's a 16:9 HD show at 29fps that runs about 55 minutes.
It needs that extra size so that it doesnt look like SHIT. Anything over 50
minutes and from the UK is 700mb so 550mb seems to be a good compromise.

Anything over 50minutes in length really should be under current tv rules 700mb
but tv groups seem to cut corners on HBO and Showtime shows and still do it as
350mb and the resulting caps arent pretty. Average bitrate for a show should be
around 900-1000k not 700-800

i didn't realize the broadcast format changed. i personally pay no attention to
the various release groups so don't follow their work. i look for shows i
like... look for the one that is being seeded best if possible smaller file size...

i understand your point about the bit rate but I don't agree that the smaller
file size "aren't pretty" or prejudice my experience...

real time in particular is a talk show so I don't look at it as a 'cinematic
experience'. I am playing the shows back on a 25" TV so resolution isn't that
big a deal when I switch over in the next few weeks to a large LCD screen I know
it is going to make a difference but still i think it is enuff for me and many
others if it is simply 'watchable'.

frankly a lot of the shows are what i would call a watch and toss (delete). if u
look at past recording habits of people u will notice back in the VHS days
people had the option of higher resolution taping but overwhelmingly opted for
the lower resolution low speed. And it is the same today i believe a lot of
people just wanna see the show have a laugh or a cry or whatever and then delete
it. If they are serious about archiving they will be waiting for DVD rips anyway....

I agree with pathomancer.
And don't see the need for an extra 200mb in quality for a talkshow...
especially one which the majority of people will only watch once and then delete it.
And while bill maher is one of my favorite people to listen to i don't see the
appeal in looking at him or the politicians he interviews in HD... I can't see
it doing anyone any favors...

I do appreciate the upload though and i'm a massive fan of the show.

Many thanks to whomever is capping this show.

I also agree with some of the other commenters here though, I don't really mind
if the quality was a little bit lower so the download could be quicker.

The Sopranos was also off HBO, same length of time, and would come out as 350Mb
episodes. Beggars can't be choosers, and I would rather be able to watch this
show than not at all, but if it doesn't involve any extra effort, I wouldn't
mind at all if it was released as 350Mb instead of 550Mb.
