About the show

The show maroons a group of strangers (as one or more tribes) in a desolate locale, where they must provide food, water, fire, and shelter for themselves, while competing in challenges to earn either a reward, or an immunity from expulsion from the game in the next of the successive votes for elimination. While much rarer than elimination by vote, medical conditions, such as injury or infection, have eliminated several contestants. The last two or three survivors face a jury composed of the last seven, eight, or nine players voted off. That jury interrogates the final few, and then votes for the winner of the game, the title of Sole Survivor and a million dollar prize.

Two significant "twists" have been added to this season. Unlike previous seasons where tribes lived at separate camp sites, the two tribes will be living at the same camp together. While the concept of two tribes living at the same camp also appeared in Survivor: Thailand, Survivor: Palau, and Survivor: Fiji, this is the first time it was employed at the beginning of the game for an indefinite amount of time. The two tribes will also be divided by gender, which was previously done in Survivor: The Amazon, Survivor: Vanuatu and Survivor: Panama. The second twist involves the hidden immunity idols. There will be two idols hidden, each one designated for a specific tribe. If a castaway finds an idol designated for his tribe, the castaway may keep and use it; If a castaway finds an idol designated for the opposing tribe, he or she must give it to a member of the opposing tribe before the next Tribal Council. Redemption Island, used in the previous two seasons, did not return for this season, but, according to Jeff Probst in an interview with Entertainment Weekly's Dalton Ross, it may return again in the future.
