"Portlandia" features [Fred] Armisen, [Carrie] Brownstein and guest stars satirizing such alternative culture types as the owners of a feminist book store, a bike messenger, a punk-rock couple, and an arty duo obsessed with putting little cut-outs of birds on anything they lay their hands on. Portland's actual mayor, Sam Adams, also appears on the show, serving as an assistant to the fictional city leader played by guest star Kyle MacLachlan. Each half-hour episode will consist of interwoven short films, with some characters recurring from week-to-week.
"Portlandia" is also the name of the second-largest copper statue in the United States (10.6 meters high), and is located above the entrance of the Portland Building on 5th Avenue in downtown Portland, Oregon. The "Portlandia" statue appears in the opening montage.

On March 21, 2012, it was officially announced by IFC that the series had been renewed for a twelve episode third season, set to premiere on January 4, 2013. Chloe Sevigny is set to recur in season three as Fred and Carries new roommate, whilst Kyle MacLachlan will also be returning as the mayor of Portland. The premiere will feature two episodes aired back-to-back. Other guest stars set to appear in season three include Roseanne Barr, Bill Hader, Rose Byrne, Patton Oswalt, Jim Gaffigan, Juliette Lewis, Matt Lucas, Bobby Moynihan, Matt Berry, George Wendt, Martina Navratilova, and J Mascis.
