"The Amazing Race" is a Reality/Game Show program featuring 11 teams of 2 (12 in the third and fourth seasons) racing around the world for a cash prize of $1,000,000. The teams compete in thirteen legs traveling all over the world. In most legs the last team to arrive at the pit stop is eliminated. When only three teams remain in the race, they compete in a final leg. The first team to arrive at the final mat becomes the winner of The Amazing Race, $1,000,000 and a congratulatory hug from Phil.

The season will span 30,000 miles (48,000 km) through nine countries in five different continents. The season features the Race's first visit to the French overseas country of French Polynesia, where teams skydived above the island of Bora Bora. Other confirmed tasks and travel destinations include "Shemozzle racing" in New Zealand, hunting scorpions with Bushmen in Botswana, and climbing the north face of the Eiger in Switzerland.
The contestants include YouTube vloggers Joey Graceffa and Meghan Camarena, hockey-playing brothers, a pair of cancer survivors, roller derby moms, and Stealing Angels vocalists Caroline Cutbirth and Jennifer Kuhle. Bates Battaglia has played in the National Hockey League for several teams, though he is currently an unrestricted free agent, while his brother Anthony currently plays for the Tulsa Oilers of the Central Hockey League.
In an interview with TV Guide, Keoghan revealed that the Double Your Money prize introduced in the previous season would not be included in season 22.
