ABC captured Tuesday night in key demo categories behind hot first-year reality show "Wipeout" and another winning performance from "Primetime: Family Secrets." NBC ruled the night's middle hour, meanwhile, with "America's Got Talent."

According to preliminary nationals from Nielsen, "Wipeout" (3.6 rating/12 share in adults 18-49, 9.9 million viewers overall) dominated the 8 o'clock hour and was the night's top program in key young-adult demos. It matched its prior four-week average in 18-49 and hit series highs in teens 12-17 (2.7/11) and kids 2-11 (3.4/13). It doubled up its closest competitor, NBC gameshow "Celebrity Family Feud" (1.8/6 in 18-49, 7.3 million viewers overall).

At 9 p.m., "America's Got Talent" surged to the lead (3.3/10 in 18-49, 12.9 million viewers overall), dominating in every key category and standing as the night's most-watched program overall. It was a tight battle for second in demos between ABC's "I Survived a Japanese Gameshow" (2.2/6 in 18-49, 5.7 million viewers overall) and CBS' "Big Brother" (2.1/6 in 18-49, 6.1 million viewers overall), with both shows down a bit week to week.

Closing out the night, ABC newsmag "Primetime: Family Secrets" (2.2/6 in 18-49, 6.7 million viewers overall) was down from its week-earlier premiere but still won out over repeat crime dramas "Law & Order: SVU" on NBC (1.9/6 in 18-49, 6.8 million viewers overall) and "Without a Trace" on CBS (1.4/4 in 18-49, 5.7 million viewers overall).

Fox, whose Tuesday summer series wrapped a couple of weeks ago, wasn't much of a factor on the night with repeats of "Kitchen Nightmares" (1.6/5 in 18-49, 3.8 million viewers overall) and "House" (1.9/6 in 18-49, 5.2 million viewers overall).

Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: ABC, 2.7/9; NBC, 2.3/7; Fox, 1.8/5; CBS and Univision, 1.7/5; CW, 0.5/1.

In total viewers: NBC, 9.0 million; ABC, 7.4 million; CBS, 6.8 million; Fox, 4.5 million; Univision, 3.8 million; CW, 1.1 million.
