VP Debate scores big ratings Login to vote
Last night's vice presidential debate was no second banana.

The showdown between Sarah Palin and Joe Biden was watched by a combined 38.7 million on the big four broadcast networks, Nielsen Media Research estimates said.

That's up a whopping 30 percent over the 29.7 million who caught last week's presidential debate on ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox.

Palin-Biden's overnight ratings were 42 percent higher than John McCain and Barack Obama's face-off. That number apparently included cable networks carrying the debate. If estimates hold, Palin-Biden will go down as the most watched vice presidential debate, if not the most watched overall TV debate ever.

The exact size of last night's TV audience was not yet known. The McCain-Obama face-off was watched overall by 52.4 million.

If Palin-Biden ends up being bigger than McCain-Obama, the results would hardly be surprising. Even more than the presidential race, the veep contest has a TV star—and with apologies to the U.S. Senator from Delaware, it's not Biden.

Since her debut on the national scene just weeks ago, Palin has helped drive up ratings for network news shows and even Saturday Night Live, where the Tina Fey version of the Alaskan governor has that long-running NBC show up about 50 percent over last season.

Palin helped fuel interest in her debating skills by discussing Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's head, and other topics with CBS' Katie Couric.
