The battle for Project Runway heats up Mark Loves Sharon Login to vote
Project Runway is in the middle of a messy divorce. The fashion-based reality show is at the center of a custody battle between its old mom, Bravo, and its new mom, Lifetime. In April, Bravo was shocked when the show's production house, The Weinstein Company, decided to pack its things and move in with Lifetime. So shocked, in fact, that it sued the pants off Lifetime. But things aren't done yet.

Lifetime filed a countersuit against Bravo (as well as the Weinstein Company and Bravo's parent NBC Universal) on Tuesday, asking the courts to respect its right to Project Runway under copyright law. Bravo previously filed--and won--an injunction against Project Runway's move over to Lifetime.

This all stems from Bravo's claim that The Weinstein Company broke contract by shopping Project Runway to NBC Universal prematurely and before Bravo had a chance to match offers.

"We filed a complaint for declaratory judgment and injunctive relief as a further means of trying to ensure that the copyright issues in this dispute are decided by a federal court," Lifetime said in a statement, according to Variety.

Legal mumbo jumbo aside, what this means is that all parties lose. Bravo has an uphill battle to reclaim rights to Project Runway, Lifetime gets screwed over what can arguably called its biggest prize to date, and the show itself will have to sit on the shelf until someone with a gavel can make a decision.

Of course the biggest losers are the fans of Project Runway, and this little nugget won't make things any better: the sixth edition of Project Runway is nearly completed. It was originally scheduled for a fall premiere, then pushed back to early next year. Now who knows when it will see the light of day.
