Show 101: Gossip Girl, Season Three Gossip Girl Login to vote
The guilty pleasure fashion-fest is tromping back to the airwaves on Monday night. Let's get prepared!
Airing: Premieres Monday, Sept. 14th at 8/7c on the CW

Why You Might Love It: Because who doesn't like watching rich, obnoxious kids tool around Manhattan on their parents' dime, coming up with cruel schemes and making out with each other?

Why You Might Hate It: Because it's about rich, obnoxious kids tooling around Manhattan on their parents' dime, coming up with cruel schemes and making out with each other. Like, in a fake way. It's not even "real", like NYC Prep

The Premise: Based (pretty loosely at this point) on the best-selling book series by Cecily von Ziegesar, Gossip Girl follows a host of friends and frenemies--Upper East Side queens Blair Waldorf and Serena van der Woodsen, UES kings (kinda queens, too) Nate Archibald and Chuck Bass, poor destitute loft-dwelling Brooklynites Dan and Jenny Humphrey, their parents, and a hobo that no one likes named Vanessa--as they navigate tricky society waters. They were at a tony prep school, but now they've graduated and are headed off to college and the like. Stories turn over pretty quickly, so there's not a ton to keep up on. Just know that pretty much everyone has a romantic history with pretty much everyone else.

What You Need to Know: Again, they're all headed to college now, so it might be the perfect time to pick up the show if you haven't watched before. New places, new people! JoAnna Garcia (Privileged, Reba) is joining the cast for four episodes as Bree Buckley, a new ladyfriend of prettyboy Nate's. I spoke with her briefly on the phone yesterday and, besides the usual pleasantries ("Everyone was so nice!" Suuure they were...), she told me that her character may seem not so, um, nice sometimes, but that she's doing it all for a good cause: her family. So, that sounds mildly intriguing! Other than that, everyone's headed to NYU or Columbia, except for troubled moon-goddess Serena, who is supposedly off to Brown. You can pretty much guarantee that she will not stay there long. Providence is far! Ambitious-at-any-cost Blair and sneering lothario Chuck have finally settled into a committed relationship, though given this show's pacing, it'll probably only last a week or two. Witchy exile Georgina Sparks (the regrettable Michelle Trachtenberg) is returning to stir shit up as Blair's roommate, so that might be sorta fun. Basically things come and go pretty easily on this show--they're big huge deals one minute, then forgotten escapades the next (much like it really was at that age)--so it's not at all hard to just strap in and enjoy the ride, even if you don't know all the back story.

Come suffer/jump for joy with us, won't you?
