Episode Description
Hello, internet friends. Mattie Do, here. You might remember me from the video I posted just over a week ago offering you all the chance to open source my first film, Chanthaly! I've got about a week left on my Indiegogo campaign at:
If you click over to the campaign updates, there's a video announcing an awesome COMMUNITY CHALLENGE!!! If I can reach my goal of $30,000 before the campaign ends, I'm going to open source my first film Chanthaly to the internet. In the eight days since, I've announced this challenge, all y'all my internet peeps have raised just over $12,000 for my second film!
So I wanted to give you a preview of what exactly I'm talking about when I say open source.
So here's what this archive contains:
- 16GB of footage, from slate to cut, for all the print takes for scenes 41 to 47 of Chanthaly.
- .5GB of second system audio to cover the dialogue, foley and atmosphere sound.
- A PDF of the English shooting script for the scenes.
- The Adobe CS6 Premiere and After Effects original project files for the edit.
- A plain text Edit Decision List, just in case you don't have access to Premiere.
It's everything that I had when I made the movie myself.
This is just about 2 minutes of the film. If we hit the community challenge goal, I'll upload exactly the same materials for the other 96 minutes of the film. Plus, the subtitles. And a few other extras.
I tried to pick a cool part of the film for you. There's a bit with the ghost, a jump scare that I never thought worked as well as it should (maybe one of you can find a better solution!) and about 15 minutes of me trying to get my stubborn dog to eat sausage off the floor. What kind of a stupid dog won't just eat sausages off the floor? Well, you're about to see...
So you're about to open this project file up and poke around a little.
I made Chanthaly with a Canon 550d/t2i and a 2008 refurb Macbook Pro. That, combined with the 40ºC (105ºF) jungle heat, caused some significant problems during postproduction. I could only keep about three minutes of the film open at once while I was editing. I edited the film on CS6, and (shout out!) RED GIANT generously donated a bunch of plugins to my film. So you'll se some Colorista II, Magic Bullet Looks 2, and perhaps a bit of Denoiser II. Expect Premiere to inquire about that.
So, like I said, three minutes at a time for 100 minutes. I never saw the full film all together before it was finished... Strange that.
There were some problems getting Colorista and Looks to play nice together in Premiere. It crashed repeatedly. I mean, over and over. In the end, we did the edit in Premiere. Then, we did the primary color correction on adjustment layers in Premiere. After that, I exported a DPX image stream from Premiere and imported it into After Effects to do the secondary color correction.
It wasn't a good solution, I know. But that's how it happened in the end. We'd never made a film before, so we were just figuring it out as we went...
So enjoy. Here's a look into how Laos' first horror film was made.
I love y'all,
- Mattie
