some links for this show http://www.boston.com/ae/tv/articles/2008/07/11/flashpoint_resorts_to_usual_suspects/ "flashpoint," cbs's new police drama, is just going through the motions. it goes through the motions quite competently and respectably. but it is nonetheless merely re-creating crime-series moves we've all seen many times before, with only the faintest afterimage of originality. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1059475/ when the strategic response unit arrives, the rules change. the bad guy's caught - he just doesn't know it yet. the sru, inspired by toronto's emergency task force, is a handpicked team of elite cops. high risk is their business and these men and women do it all: rescue hostages, bust gangs, defuse bombs. talk down suicidal teens. protect the pope. they handle state-of-the-art weapons - sniper rifles, flash-bang grenades, tasers. they climb the sides of buildings. see through walls. but they're different from other swat teams. because their arsenal also includes a gift for words. a knowledge of human intuition. an instinct for when it's time to negotiate - and when the 'solution' calls for something more. on the scene, they're in charge. no one knows their job better. sru constables outrank senior inspectors - and the inspectors don't like it. regular uniforms grumble when pushed aside by the sru 'prima donnas.' while secretly wishing they were in their place. it's a tough job. a job that carries the kind of pressure only your teammates - your band of brothers - can really understand. it's a stress that shades all your choices and can take a heavy toll on families, friends, lovers... these people are a-types and risk-takers. on the job, they play by the rules, bend them if they have to. but off the job, all bets are off... http://www.edmontonsun.com/entertainment/television/2008/07/11/6126491-sun.html cbs/ctv putting flashpoint in a tough spot beverly hills, calif. -- the question now is whether viewers will get the point and find flashpoint tonight. the ctv/cbs co-production, which follows the exploits of an elite emergency police unit in toronto, has received a lot of publicity north of the border. it has been saddled with a friday night time slot, however -- and a mid-july debut, no less -- which is not exactly of the marquee variety. to cbs, flashpoint probably is just another cop drama, while it obviously means more to ctv and the canadian tv industry. nonetheless, cbs clearly was the main influence with regard to the time slot for the simulcast (which allows a canadian network to run its ads over the american feed). there certainly are some very well-shot and intense scenes in the first episode of flashpoint, which stars canadians hugh dillon and enrico colantoni. "it's those six magic letters, cbs and ctv," dillon said. "it raises the stakes, but in a great way." |

well, i liked it. yes, it's yet another "cop drama", but this one is done very nicely imho. good acting, generally good writing, and overall, i think it should be interesting to watch going forward. besides, anything is better than another reality tv show. :disgust: |

well, as much as i have lost confidence in most of these low budget canadian home grown for the canadian content rules shows, i was intrigued by a comment i read from a critic who said that this show was a bit better then borders, which came out last year and i liked it quite a bit. i watched it last night and agree that it was a very well done drama. good performances and most importantly, snappy and intelligently done cut backs and scene switching. intelligence, wonderland or da vinci it is not, which is likely a good thing, because being too good on canadian tv is sure to get you cancelled, but it was pretty good drama and i will watch the second episode. one or two notes of discord. episode one, is indeed a very close re-enactment of an actual encounter in downtown toronto a few years ago. i am sad to report however that the nationality of the hostage taker was changed from someone from the caribbean to everybody\'s favourite ethnic bad guys this season, a croatian. i suppose this allowed them to add the element of language problems which was a pretty good addition but all i can say is that the croatian community must have a pretty lousy lobby group and their national image is suffering for it. i really hate the fact that someone felt the need to pass the politically correct magic wand over this script. the second episode, starring the wonderful character actor henry czerny, is a rip off of a 2002 denzel washington movie entitled \\\\\\\"john q\\\\\\\". in the original, denzel plays a distraught father of a sick child who takes an operating room hostage and demands a life saving operation for his child. in the canadian, sanitized and magically wanded version, henry czerny plays a white distraught father of a sick child who takes an operating .....yada, yada. i have not seen it yet but i will take bets that the character henry is playing may just end up being another gun toting croatian. either those guys have to hire an ad agency or canadian television producers have to grow a pair. enjoy this show. props to eztv for making my viewing life much, much easier. thanks 4foot |

i'll be giving this show a few chances no matter what, probably more than i'd give a show outside of summer. i'm just glad to see one of my faves, enrico colantoni, on tv again. i've missed him since veronica mars got the axe. |

i remember a story a while back on global news (toronto) which profiled the etf (which, in this show, has been renamed sru). pretty much everything in the show regarding sru's tactics, equipment and responses (as well as their outranking of inspectors) was bang-on with what etf is and does. also, the story in this first episode very closely mirrors an actual incident in front of toronto's union station in 2004. in more than 40 years of service, the etf has taken just 9 lives. the hostage-taker outside of union station was the 9th. |

hey, it's the pink power ranger! like one of the previous posters, it reminded me a bit of the border and to a lesser extent intelligence...i think it's the cinematography. of course, the characters are painted as real people right off the bat--more so than they would be if it were the first ep of an american production, too (which i adore). definitely going to continue downloading this one. |

in response to prkan's comment about the language... it is quite refreshing to see that they got that right. it's very often that we see croats and serbs speaking russian, polish and even hungarian. however, being serb myself, i could very much argue that it's not actually serbian that they speak, rather very localized serbian/croatian dialect spoken in croatian highlands, called lika. it is impossible to tell serbian from croatian in father's speak, because it was pretty bad. however, son speaks perfect local dialect. |

i don\'t understand this show. with out giving out to much about the show, i just want to know how a law enforcement officer can be treated like a criminial after being requested and trained to do his/her job? fracking bullsh1t! and i\'m not sure but i think and beleive if you crack that hard mentally after one \"clean\" shoot, then i would not want you on the team, watching my back, crying all over my bdu\'s and lbe gear, frigging sissy! snippers, swat and first responders are type \"a\" personalities, thrill seakers, highly motivated individuals. not cry babies!? most officers spend a carreer to join a special unit and would give a testical \"or vag lip\" depending on the gender- to be accepted. not to mention a battery of mental test and physical training. are they perfect? no. not at all but, to fall apart from an incident as depicted in the show is complete cannon fodder. this show was nothing but a disapoinment and it seamed to be directed by a limp wristed, tree hugging, wanna be indy film directer. a tampon commercial with cops is all it was. watch it cry hold hands and support the show. i, however, will not. i gave it a "shot" and now i question my manhood and now need medication. lol! get it? gave it a \"shot\"....ahahahah. |
