the man behind cult hits the sopranos and sex and the city is set to develop the r-rated aussie crime series for us audiences. chris albrecht, former head of hit us cable network hbo and now boss of new satellite network starz, has reportedly acquired the rights to underbelly almost 18 months after the aussie series began screening quietly on an obscure cable network directv. screentime australia's des monaghan, executive producer of all three underbelly series' for nine, said he was surprised the deal was made public. but the aussie tv and film veteran admitted the development is a huge pat on the back for the team behind the australian series. "of course i'm delighted at how well (underbelly) has been received in america and even more delighted that chris is such an enthusiastic fan,'' monaghan told the daily telegraph. "he has a remarkable track record and has a huge enthusiasm for tv generally.'' albrecht, head of hbo for 20 years, is renowned in hollywood as the man who developed other gritty hits such as six feet under, deadwood, entourage, band of brothers and the wire. it's understood plans on re-launching underbelly with a new cast and may feature new storylines based around historical true crime stories of america's past. new york magazine reported yesterday that albrecht is currently researching various american crime families that they can build story arcs around. monaghan was unable to confirm if the american series would include elements of the three existing series or any of the aussie cast who featured in the award-winning drama. "the truth is i don't know at this stage. we will be involved involved but exactly how it will pan out i don't know,'' he said. "i expect there will be a significant development period and we will have a better idea going into next year.'' all three underbelly series' have screened in the us, with american audiences watching the series in chronological order starting with a tale of two cities, followed by the golden mile and finishing recently with the original underbelly series based around the melbourne gang war between 1994 and 2004. monaghan confirmed albrecht has also optioned the rights to any future underbelly series or tele-movies. starz currently screens a handful of hit programs, including spartacus, torchwood and camelot.
