tensions build in new trailer for hbo’s the leftovers as season 1 draws to a close.

there are only 2 episodes left for the hbo drama’s first season and judging by the new trailer, suffice it to say, things are looking pretty grim.

based on the novel by tom perrotta and created by perrotta and lost alum damon lindelof, the leftovers follows the lives of those left behind after a rapture-like event claims 3 % of the world’s population.

for those who have been watching, much of what is seen in the trailer seems on par with the direction the season has taken. chief kevin garvey (justin theroux) is still battling with his sanity and tensions between the general populace and the chain-smoking guilty remnant cult are reaching a potentially violent and ugly climax.

it’s also interesting to note that the trailer hints we may be getting more of an explanation for what the departure actually was. the book and the show have been intentionally vague on what happened, preparing viewers for the possibility that we’ll never find out. yet recent episodes have given leading clues that some characters may know more than they’ve been letting on, specifically garvey’s father (played by scott glenn) and priest matt jamison (christopher eccleston).
